Do you know what to look for

Signs that you may be buying a house with mold

If you would like to sort of a “pre-inspection” before calling in the professionals, here’s a list of things to look at to know if you’re possibly buying a house with mold:

  1. Does the house have wet carpet or water stains.
Carpeting and carpet padding are great mold foods and mold growth can easily hide inside carpeting and padding.
  2. Does the home have indoor bodies of water?
An indoor pool, jacuzzi spa or large fish aquarium continuously generates high indoor humidity to drive mold growth.
  3. Is there a built in humidifier?
As humidifier pushes moisture and humidity throughout the house, this increases the chances of indoor mold growth. This is true for humidifiers that are built into the home’s heating/cooling equipment and free-standing, portable units.
  4. Does the refrigerator have an automatic ice maker?
Water supply line that brings water to an automatic ice maker often goes bad. A bad water supply line causes leaking water and could promote mold growth into kitchen floors, walls, and cabinets.
  5. Does bathroom and laundry vents lead outdoors?
Such vents often exhaust high humidity air into attics, crawl spaces, walls, ceilings, or floors, rather than directly outdoors. Be sure that these vents are leading outdoors to prevent moisture build-up.
  6. Does the air conditioning condensation pan have a leak?
Air conditioning systems include a drip pan to catch water than condenses and drips from the air conditioning coils. Such drip pans are sometimes poorly installed or the pan drain pipe becomes blocked, thus allowing water flooding and mold growth into adjacent walls and ceilings.
  7. Does the building lot slope towards the house?
If the house building lot slopes downward toward the house, rather than away from the house, there is going to be significant water intrusion into the basement, crawl space, concrete slab, and/or building foundation, and thus enabling the growth of mold resulting from such water intrusion.
  8. Does the house on the side or bottom of a hill?
A residence that is located on the side of a hill or at the bottom of a hill will be a moldy house because rain fall will cause significant ground water intrusion into the same areas mentioned above.
  9. Is the roof overhang too short?
If the roof overhang extends less than two feet beyond the walls beneath the overhang, rainfall will fall upon and run down the exterior walls to soak into the wood and masonry surfaces of such walls.
  10. Has the house ever had a leaky roof?
If the roof surface or flashings around a chimney or furnace and plumbing vent pipes are degraded or poorly-maintained, water will enter into the home’s attic and run downward into the insides of the ceilings, floors, and walls beneath the attic to cause huge, hidden toxic mold growth therein.
  11. Has the house ever had a crawl space water intrusion?
Most crawl space dirt floors suffer from water wicking upward from the ground water in the soil. In addition, rainfall frequently runs into crawl spaces. Crawl space water intrusion results in big toxic mold growth that can grow upward into the insides of the floors and walls above.
  12. Does the house have leaking water supply or sewage drain pipes?
Plumbing line leaks can cause massive toxic mold growth inside and on walls, ceilings, and floors.

Remember these tips and always hire an experienced and trusted home inspector when purchasing a home. Good luck on your house hunting!

Dangers of Mold

7/1/2019 (Permalink)

Most people think mold is just something in your house that looks nasty in the bathroom. But before you know the dangers of mold you should have an idea of what exactly mold is. Mold belongs to the fungi family.

This nasty element can thrive almost anywhere. Believe it or not, mold is present almost everywhere. Recent studies performed have shown that over 50 percent of homes and businesses have moisture present which is a prime harvesting spot for mold. Below we have compiled 5 tips and tricks to detect if mold has entered your home or business.

  1. Always be on the lookout

Look for visible signs of mold growth such as fuzzy-like specimens colored gray, white, black, or green. Some types of mold aren’t as dangerous as others, black mold is by far the most dangerous mold and one should you most certainly be aware of.

  1. Home Mold Test Kits

Home Depot and Lowe’s have do-it-yourself mold kits that are designed to find any presence of mold in your home. As some molds are hard to identify, these kits are proven to ensure safety in both your home or business.

  1. Winter Mist

As the season’s change and rain mixes with colder temperatures, there is an excess of moisture. This extra amount of moisture can open the door to fungal growth which thrives in damp areas.

  1. Use the sense of smell

Be on the lookout for an ammonia scent, although this doesn’t occur with all types of molds any unfamiliar or musty smells in the house could mean that mold has surfaced.

  1. Basement Flooding

People living up north this can be a huge problem for you! If you find your basement flooding from time to time, this could be a huge red flag that your home could be suffering from mold infestation. Any water discoloration or mustiness are huge indicators that mold has begun to take over.

Mold removal is essential to keeping a home and the people in it safe, healthy, and comfortable. Mold, mildew, rot, and dust mites can cause serious health issues, including asthma, allergies, eye and respiratory issues, and much more. Mold Can Be Sneaky and Prevalent

Mold affects indoor air quality, and, unfortunately, can grow very quickly. In fact, mold can begin to grow in a home with humidity over 60% in under 48 hours. Mold can even grow and thrive in cold spaces, such as a refrigerator, as long as the temperature is above 40-degrees Fahrenheit. "Hidden" rot can also secretly grow in fiberglass insulation, and behind wallpaper and drywall. Even though you may not be able to visibly see the rot, it doesn't mean that it's not there and causing damage to your home and your health.

The weather here in Solano Countryt can be many things, depending on the time of year, and even the time of day. Hot, muggy summers can offer pristine conditions for mold growth. Likewise, a frigid winter causing pipes to burst and homes to flood can equally encourage mold growth if the water is not removed quickly and effectively

Mold can grow very quickly. Some experts believe mold can start growing in 24 to 48 hours after a flood if standing water is still present. Environmental factors like temperature and air movement also play a role in the potential growth. This is what it is important to get a professional water restoration company into the space quickly. They will start the drying process immediately after a flood or other water loss, often even before the insurance adjuster arrives on site

Understanding Mold

If your home has been exposed to a water leak, then you may have things growing that you didn't expect. With the greater awareness of the hazards of exposure to mildew and other fungus growths, it is important to have your residence tested and treated as quickly as possible. Mold remediation is very involved and something you should start as soon as your home has tested positive.

Since water is required for growth and contamination, the first step of the plan is to identify the source of the accumulation and stop it. The specialist will assess the size of the moisture problem and what damage has been done before continuing. If the affected area is large, you may have to relocate from your home temporarily, just until the process is complete. The area will be contained during the repair process. In order to contain the area, your mold remediation specialist will turn off all fans and heaters. Since water is required for growth and contamination, the first step of the plan is to identify the source of the accumulation and stop it. If the affected area is large, you may have to relocate from your home temporarily, just until the process is complete. The area will be contained during the repair process. In order to contain the area, your mold remediation specialist will turn off all fans and heaters. He or she may use physical barriers and negative air pressure chambers to isolate the growth and spores. As the assessment and repairs move forward, you may find that the damage is greater than you thought. You must be willing to be flexible in order to make your home safe to inhabit again. Once the area is contained and the water issue has been repaired, your technician will begin removing the infested materials. How this happens will depend not only on the amount, but also on the type of growth and surfaces that are affected. It may be as simple as using antifungal and antimicrobial treatments to remove the colonies from the surfaces. These treatments will also prevent new colonies from forming. However, if the surface is porous then more drastic measures may be taken. Sections of the area may have to be removed and replaced in order to eradicate the growth. Items like drywall, carpet, and carpet padding are examples of items that may need to be replaced. Mold remediation is not just restricted to floors and walls. Contents within the room have to be cleaned. This includes furniture, decorations, curtains, and any clothing. Your technician will have ways to decontaminate these items without damaging them. He or she will also have fogging equipment that will take the musty smell out of the room

Why You Need Air Duct Cleaning: Mold, Mildew, and More

2/1/2019 (Permalink)

Your heating and air system is much more than just the box in your yard. There is an entire network of air ducts that sends conditioning throughout your home, and the quality of this network dramatically affects your comfort. Just like any other mechanical device, air duct cleaning is an essential part of maintaining the quality of your system. Without proper care, there are a number of problems that can occur without you even realizing what is wrong.

Mold and Mildew

During the summer, anytime your AC is not running, the ductwork is getting hotter. When you send cold air into the house, the ductwork rapidly cools, causing condensation. Normally, the strength of the flow would prevent the condensation from lingering in the ducts. However, over time, the flow in your system can decline, particularly if the sealing on the ductwork starts to weaken. If this occurs, moisture will sit in the ductwork and create mold. If left unchecked, mildew can cause several issues in your home.

The first concern that can be created by mold is stench. Mildew festers, and if the problem gets bad enough, you can be sending stale, stinky oxygen throughout the house every time you crank up the thermostat. While this is certainly inconvenient, there are much more serious health risks associated with mold. Mold spores that become airborne can travel into the house, infecting the walls, carpet, and furniture. Over time, it can cause illness and breathing issues. Air duct cleaning will eliminate all traces of mold and mildew, and it will also improve the performance of your system by eliminating dust.

Dust Buildup

No matter how often you clean, your house is full of dust. Dead skin cells, fecal matter, pollen, and pet dander all contribute to what we know as simple household dust. Dust is a major issue for a heating and ventilation system. In large quantities, it can actually increase the cooling demand on the home. This increases the runtime of your AC unit, which makes your power bills get bigger. Your ductwork is essentially a giant vacuum hose that pulls everything out of the air and sends it through the system.

While there are filters that deal with some of the dust issues, the reality is that very few people have adequate filtration installed in their home. Only with expensive cleaners and purifiers can the dust issue be truly eliminated. For most homeowners, the filter is merely a bandage, preventing an issue from getting worse rather than solving it. When filtration fails, large quantities of dust start to build up in the ductwork. If enough buildup occurs, it can start to affect the flow through the system. This yet again increases runtimes, further escalating your power bills. Instead of simply being a nuisance, dust buildup can actually start to cost you hundreds of dollars a year.

The good news is that all these issues are entirely preventable. Call SERVPRO of Fairfield today and ask us how air duct cleaning can benefit your home.

What to Expect From a Mold Remediation Company

11/14/2018 (Permalink)

Don't Be Afraid by the Men in the White Suits!

As with any other hazardous material, like removing of lead-based paint or asbestos for example, mold remediation workers will fully suit up for action. They will have N- 95 masks, white suits, booties, and goggles. Truly looking like men from outer space. This does not necessarily mean that the mold remediation company will be removing toxic mold, but all precautions are taken. This is the standard operating procedure for any job where they are dealing with hazardous materials.
When dealing with Black Mold or any other color the remediation will follow a similar process to what is outlined below. Here is what you should expect:

Step One: We Need Access

We will have equipment, plastic, and tape everywhere. So please keep the animals somewhere else and move cars from the driveway or garage, and clear a wide access from the outside all the way to the mold area. The mold remediation company will park a vehicle as near as possible to doorway, lay down plastic sheeting, and run hoses through the house to the mold area. If the mold area is accessible from the outside (such as a crawlspace), it is so much the better. A quality mold remediation company will take care to keep your house clean while they do the work.

Step Two: Kill Mold with Biocide

The first step of this process is to isolate all infected area from the remaining rooms of the home. This is usually done with plastic sheeting and tape to make a barrier. The next step is to spray the mold area with biocide. Biocide is an EPA-approved liquid which kills mold. Please Note that bleach is not approved by the EPA for killing mold. Typically, this first step should take less time than the second step. After the workers leave, the biocide goes to work, killing the mold spores. The mold remediation company should spray well beyond the moldy area to ensure that no more mold grows. For example, if only a limited area of an attic exhibits mold, the mold remediation company will probably still spray down the entire attic. This is more desirable, and you should confirm with the company this is standard procedure.

Step Three: Remove the Mold

Typically the next day, the mold remediation company returns. Again, clear access is needed. They begin the task of removing the dead mold from its food source. This is usually part of your house. There are several different methods that can be used for this section. One crude and time consuming method is sanding, scraping and using a wire brush. Others include media blasting this would include baking soda, dry ice, sand, and other types of media.

Step Four: Clean the area

Here is where a lot of the clean-up begins. Once all the dead mold is removed from the substrate the area will need to vacuum with a HEPA (High Efficiency particular air) filter attachment. This will allow all the mold spores that were released when the mold was dying to be captured and disposed of alone with the Mycotoxins and allergens associated.

Step Five: Spray Sealer to prevent Mold from Returning

The second to last step in the process is to treat the previously affected area with a sealer to prevent new or re occurring mold growth. The remediation company should spray an area greater than the affected area to insure it is covered. If an attic or crawlspace is involved the whole area should be treated. This is a very important step in the process.

Step Six: Final Clean up

This is where the all the plastic comes down and tape is removed. These should be cautiously taken down as to not disturb were the mold spores may have landed. Once the all the plastic and tape is removed the area will need to be HEPA vacuumed again and a spore count analysis taken to verify that the home has normal levels of mold.

Mold on the Loose

11/5/2018 (Permalink)

Notice all the gray spores, that is mold.

A lot of times, we may think we do not have mold in our home because we can not see it. Don't let it fool you, be proactive in finding mold, hidden mold is most common. The smell of mold is very unpleasant. Some compare it to rotten wood or wet socks. Mold has a moist like smell to it. Take the time every so often to check behind appliances, cabinets, in closets, behind furniture, and bathrooms. It is important to be on the look out for mold as it can cause harm due to the toxins it can put in the air. But just because you can't see it, does not mean that you don't have any. This photo shows mold behind a cabinet from a customer's kitchen. We went in to do water restoration and low and behold, there was mold. The owner had no idea that it was even there. Mold comes in all colors , shapes, and sizes.  If you discover mold, let us take care of it immediately.

Containment of Mold is Important

11/2/2018 (Permalink)

Every construction project, no matter how large or small, will create a cleaning project. Fortunately, there are many ways to keep post construction cleaning to a minimum, all of which SERVPRO of Fairifield can provide. We work with numerous local remodeling contractors to be sure your home is kept clean and dust free throughout the rebuilding process.

Pre-construction site protection certainly has some financial benefits.  It will reduce required labor, prevent incidental damage to unprotected areas, and shorten project lifetime. Containment also has some safety benefits – it creates a safety barrier to keep non-construction people away from the work area and it will help prevent the spread of airborne particles / construction dust, some of which may be toxic and difficult to clean completely.

Overtime these particles settle over surfaces and belongings, traveling through HVAC systems and permeating throughout the home. It is possible to suffer from post construction dust for months or even years, especially if the HVAC system has not been properly sealed or cleaned. This can negatively affect the occupants, chiefly those with compromised immune systems or those sensitive to allergens.

Our IICRC certified team creates a site protection plan in accordance to each customer’s unique needs. Construction and site protection can at times be obstructive to those who choose to occupy the home throughout the project. However, our team strives to design contaminate shields that won’t compromise the occupants’ use of the home. By utilizing our vast range of materials to protect HVAC systems, carpeting, walls, ceilings, and everything in between, SERVPRO of Fairfield can save you time, money and headaches.

Common Signs of Mold Growth

9/26/2018 (Permalink)

Any sort of water damage in a home can abuse a multitude of problems, but one of the big issues people deal with is mold growth popping up after you believe the moisture to be dried out.

Not only can mold growth cause structural damage and unsightly stains, it can also be the catalyst for you or family members to experience health problems.

A large part of the problem is that mold exposure doesn’t necessarily immediately come to mind if someone has a persistent runny nose or a scratchy throat.

Let’s go over some of the signs you might have mold growing in your home.

Basic Signs of Mold Growth

We stress that if you find mold growing in your home, we don’t want you to panic. The problem is one that can be resolved but we don’t want to take away from the fact that it can be particularly taxing on anyone who suffers from a mold allergy.

The signs of a mold issue in your home aren’t always the same from house to house, but here are a few that are pretty universal.

Excess Moisture and Humidity

Mold needs a feeding source and moisture to grow, and because mold can feed on a wide variety of items. If your home has recently been flooded, you are definitely dealing with excess moisture.

But what if you haven’t had a flood? Is there still a chance you’ve got some excess moisture on hand?

Unfortunately, yes. If you’ve noticed some rooms in your home have a muggy feel to them or if you see condensation accumulating on your windows or mirrors, you have higher moisture levels than average. This can definitely lead to mold growth.

Musty Odor

Another sign of mold growth is a very distinct, musty odor.

If you aren’t up to date on the latest signs of mold (and there’s absolutely no reason why you should be unless you’re like me and work in the industry), you might associate this odor with your basement, if you have one, and assume that’s just how some basements smell.

I used to think basements just smelled musty.

Unfortunately, this is usually a big sign of mold growth and one that should encourage you to do a spot check of mold in your home. Plus, this odor isn’t relegated to basements only. This smell can show up anywhere mold is present.

Health Issues

Just like with any allergy, not everyone reacts the same way. Some people show no symptoms at all while others experience runny noses, headaches, itchy eyes and more. Depending on the severity of the allergy, some people can even have respiratory issues that affect their breathing.

If you’ve noticed symptoms that don’t seem to go away and there isn’t another obvious cause, there might be mold growing in your house.

Mold Stains

Seeing mold stains seems pretty obvious that you have mold, but let’s just include it to make sure we cover all the bases.

Mold comes in a variety of different colors and textures. It can be white and powdery or black and slimy. The darker varieties have a tendency to leave the more obvious stains. If you notice these on your walls or floors, it’s time to do a serious check for mold.

Preventing Mold Growth in Winter Months

9/12/2018 (Permalink)

We are frequently asked if we find "more mold" in warmer months as opposed to colder months. In order to answer that question we need to be a little more specific. If we are talking about outdoors, then yes, molds are more active in the warmer months as opposed to the colder months. If we are talking indoors the answer is no. The temperature outside will not directly affect mold growth indoors, in a controlled temperature environment.

Bottom line: if you have a mold issue in your home, it's not going to matter if its June or January. If there is a food source and a moisture source mold can grow. Something that outdoor temperatures can affect though is the moisture source that could cause mold growth in your home.

In the colder months, homeowners can be faced with different challenges that could potentially create mold issues in their homes. These challenges include: frozen pipes, improper insulation, pipe bursts, ice damming and more. Here are tips to help prevent these winter-related issues that may result in mold growth:

  • Make sure all gutters are cleaned out to help prevent ice damming
  • To help prevent mold in attics, make sure the attic is properly insulated to help prevent condensation. (Remember there is such thing as too much insulation!)
  • To help prevent mold in crawl spaces, make sure any pipes running through the crawl spaces are insulated to help prevent pipe bursts. Also, if there are vents to the outside, close those vents during winter months.
  • To help prevent mold in basements, continue to run dehumidifiers in the basement, even during the winter. They may not run nearly as much, but anytime the relative humidity exceeds 50-55%, there is enough moisture in the air for mold to grow.
  • Make sure bathroom exhaust fans are working properly when you are taking your hot, steamy showers. Also, make sure those exhaust fans are vented to the outside of the home and not into your attic.

If you think you may have a mold issue, contact us at (707) 207-0122 to schedule a mold inspection for your home.

Health Dangers of Mold

8/24/2018 (Permalink)

Mold refers to various types of fungi that can grow in different parts of your home. Damp, warm and humid areas are ideal for the mold to grow in. If there is a leak in your house or if there has been a flood in your home recently, chances of mold growth in your property are significantly greater. You should call in a professional mold remediation service, to inspect the house for mold and to remove it.

If left unchecked, mold can have various adverse affects on the health of those that live in the property. Some of the health risks it poses are:

Allergy or Hypersensitivity

Most people react to mold because it is a highly concentrated allergen and people who already suffer from different allergies have stronger reactions to it. People will normally be faced with nasal and sinus congestion and a runny nose as part of the allergic reaction, because of the mold. In certain cases, it can also cause eye irritation, coughing, and sneezing fits.

Prolonged exposure to mold can actually lead to the growth of the fungi in the airway and become the cause of many different types of lung diseases. But this reaction is very uncommon, it only happens if the person is extremely allergic to the fungi growing in their airway.

Infections

Fungal infections are common in people who have a compromised immune system. People who have cancer, diabetes or AIDS have a higher chance of being infected by mold. The infection can be extremely serious and can prove to be fatal in some rare cases.

There are also various types of superficial infections caused, because of exposure to mold. Most of these infections affect the skin, infecting the skin of feet, arms and also the nails. Oral and nasal infections because of mold are also very common.

Toxins

In some cases, as with black mold, the mold itself is not as dangerous as the toxic substances that it produces. Inhalation and ingestion of these toxins is linked to hypersensitivity, cough, worsening of asthma, and other respiratory diseases.

The harmful effects of mold depend on the type of mold growing in your home and the state of your immune system. But, you shouldn’t wait around to find out how the mold will affect your health. Call us if there is a risk of mold growth in your home;we will come in and perform a thorough inspection of the property and re-mediate the mold.

11 Tips to Limit Mold Growth

8/13/2018 (Permalink)

Mold is a problem many homeowners associate with warm weather, but that doesn’t mean you can let your guard down just because winter is upon us. While it’s true that most molds thrive in environments more than 70° F, some types of mold do fine in cold weather. In fact, there are some settings in your winter home that create an ideal environment for mold. Here are 11 steps you can take to prevent it from taking hold.

1.Some of the places you may notice mold during the winter is in uninsulated closets, crawlspaces, attics, windows, and any other place that that temperature is colder than in the rest of the home. Ensure that spots like this are kept free from moisture.

2.Mold loves moisture. Aim to keep the humidity level below 40% in all parts of the home. When it gets higher than that, it creates a mold-friendly environment.

3.If you have spaces in your home that tend to be more humid, swap out wall-to-wall carpets for hard-surface floors or area rugs. Also, do not store books or stacks of paper in such areas.

4.As mentioned above, mold loves moisture, so it’s extremely important to fix any leaks in your roof and around doors and windows. Any spot that retains moisture is very likely to invite mold. If you can’t get the roof repaired or replaced, have a roofing contractor cover the damaged areas with a tarp to prevent leaks.

5.Be sure that all gutters and downspouts are clean and that the water flows away from your house. If it doesn’t, add inexpensive extenders to the ends of the downspout to direct water further away.

6.When taking a shower or cooking, always use fans to vent that moisture out of house.

7.Make sure that all vents in the kitchen, bathroom, and laundry vent to the outside rather than to crawlspace or attic. If not, the moisture will collect in those areas and provide a cozy spot for a mold infestation.

8.If you have a crawlspace, consider sealing it with waterproof plastic. If your crawlspace has vents, you should close them in the summer and make sure they open during the winter to prevent moisture buildup.

9.Insulate pipes and other cold surfaces in your home.

10.If you have moisture problems in your basement, talk to a company about what it would take to correct those issues. At the very least, add quality dehumidifiers.

11.Perform routine checks of your pipes, windows, and basement walls. Take immediate action if you notice condensation. Find the source of the moisture, or call in a pro to find it for you.

Many of the items on this list are regular maintenance items that should be taken care of throughout the year, but it’s always a good idea to have a winter checklist that you go through just before the start of the season. A little prevention can go a long way in warding off the hassle of a mold infestation, so take steps today to maintain maximum air quality in your home.

Should you suspect a mold problem, call the professionals at SERVPRO of Fairfield. Give us a call!

Easy to Spot Signs of Mold Growth

8/3/2018 (Permalink)

Mold and moisture build up.

Mold Growth Sign #1

Mold spores need water and a feeding source to survive. The feeding sources are plenty because mold will feed on a variety of different items, but the key is the available moisture.

Have you noticed any windows or mirrors in your home fogging up and collecting condensation? If so, this is a sign you have a higher moisture content in certain areas of your home. If you don’t have a proper ventilation system that takes any excess moisture and disposes of it outside of you home, you’re going to experience moisture buildup.

Another sign of higher moisture content is a damp or muggy feeling in certain rooms of your home. This is more prevalent in areas such as your attic or basement. Your attic is an area of your home where the temperature fluctuates on a regular basis and this alone can lead to humidity and moisture buildup. Because basements are underground, that dampness can easily seep in through any cracks or crevices in the wall or foundation and lead to excess moisture as well.

If you suspect any areas of your house to have more moisture than others, there’s a good chance you might have mold.

Mold Growth Sign #2

While mold might be sneaky, it doesn’t mean it’s completely invisible. Mold gives off a very distinct smell. It’s a musty smell and one you most likely associate with a damp feeling in the room.

People often associate this smell with a lack of air circulation but mold growth is another possibility.

If you notice any areas in your home with a musty odor, it’s a good idea to do a spot check for mold.

Mold Growth Sign #3

Are you unknowingly giving mold colonies a virtual buffet of feeding sources?

Mold has the ability to feed on multiple sources which is another reason areas of storage in your home are areas where mold growth is more prevalent. Mold will feed on curtains, fabrics, carpets, and wood and many of those items are stored in your basements and attics.

It’s important to store any possible items in airtight plastic containers. Plastic is one item mold spores do not feed upon and if the containers are sealed, there’s no way for mold to make its way to the contents inside.

Items that can’t be stored this way should be placed away from walls and not leaned on any structural beams if possible. Moisture can collect in the small areas between the item and the walls or beams and lead to a cozy spot for mold to call home.

Mold Growth Sign #4

Unfortunately, those who are allergic to mold will experience symptoms if you have mold growing in your home. Mold growth can cause a wide variety of symptoms in different people depending on the severity of the allergy.

These symptoms can be the typical allergy symptoms such as a runny nose, scratchy throat and watery eyes or they can be more severe. Some people experience respiratory issues, headaches, skin problems and even depression.

It’s important to note that if you don’t have an allergy to mold, you wouldn’t notice anything different, but keep an eye on family members and pets. If they begin to show signs and don’t seem to go away, it might be time to do a spot check.

Do You Know if You’re Buying a House with Mold?

7/13/2018 (Permalink)

House inspections could save you a lot of time and money

The new home buying process can be exciting, stressful, and scary all wrapped in one big emotion. Yes, the three “I’m ready get this over with right away” emotions. This feeling can often times lead home buyers to skip over the small but important details of the process. However, there are a number of questions that you should always ask AND get an answer to before proceeding with buying a home. One of the questions that you should be sure to get an answer to is, “Am I buying a house with mold?”

Let’s be honest. It’s not always in a realtor’s best interest to get an inspection on a property that they’re selling. A mold inspection gone bad can open up a number of problems for someone selling a home, costing thousands of dollars and they would like to knowingly be apart of selling a house with mold. However, hidden mold in a home can cause an even bigger problems for a clueless home buyer. Think about it. Imagine being super excited to move your family into the home that you have always dreamed of having. You go on a bidding war against other potential buyers that drive the price up, spend thousands of dollars on new furniture throughout the house, get the kids into a new school, all just to find out that the your dream home is really a moldy nightmare.

So how do I prevent buying a house with mold?

I’m glad you asked! When buying a new home, ask the realtor for recent paperwork showing that the home has passed an inspection. Do not take the realtor’s word alone. If there is no recent paperwork, request to have an inspection before moving forward with the buying process. Keep in mind that unless the realtor is a certified mold inspector, his advice is not likely to be helpful. You need professional mold inspectors involved. If the seller of the home is not willing to provide an inspection, then you may be saving your family and yourself a lot of headaches, figuratively and literally, by not buying the home. Do not move in without proof that there are no mold problems. Buying a house with mold can cost your family a lot of money, cause illness and develop stress.

The Dangers of Mold: 5 tips and tricks you need to know

7/3/2018 (Permalink)

Still Uncertain?

He or she will also have fogging equipment that will take the musty smell out of the room.

Why You Need Air Duct Cleaning: Mold, Mildew, And More

2/12/2018 (Permalink)

Mold removal

He or she will also have fogging equipment that will take the musty smell out of the room.

From the outset a good emergency restoration service will pay strict heed to health and safety, conducting an in-depth risk assessment of the home to be sure that all structural concerns and health risks are identified before they call the job complete. Following this and before beginning any serious work on the job, an emergency restoration service should immediately implement any stabilization procedure that might be necessary. Fire and water damage both can rot walls, ceilings, and floors, any of which may need immediate reinforcing. And by using dehumidifiers and such to regulate the ambient environment, the possibility of mold is significantly reduced.

To give yourself the opportunity to file an insurance claim to pay for emergency restoration services and reduce further damage and losses, make sure you have the right types of insurance. Read your current homeowners insurance policy to see if it has any provisions for fire damage repair and water damage repair. If not, take action to supplement that insurance for those purposes before you may need them, and then it would be too late.

When experiencing fire or water damage there is no time to waste, and suffering an emergency like a flood or a fire in your home is traumatic enough without having to suffer further damage after the incident. The quickest way to cause yourself further grief is to try to handle all the emergency repair and restoration yourself. The quickest way to relief and getting your life back is with the aid of the right expert professionals
