Common Signs of Mold Growth

Any sort of water damage in a home can abuse a multitude of problems, but one of the big issues people deal with is mold growth popping up after you believe the moisture to be dried out.
Not only can mold growth cause structural damage and unsightly stains, it can also be the catalyst for you or family members to experience health problems.
A large part of the problem is that mold exposure doesn’t necessarily immediately come to mind if someone has a persistent runny nose or a scratchy throat.
Let’s go over some of the signs you might have mold growing in your home.
Basic Signs of Mold Growth
We stress that if you find mold growing in your home, we don’t want you to panic. The problem is one that can be resolved but we don’t want to take away from the fact that it can be particularly taxing on anyone who suffers from a mold allergy.
The signs of a mold issue in your home aren’t always the same from house to house, but here are a few that are pretty universal.
Excess Moisture and Humidity
Mold needs a feeding source and moisture to grow, and because mold can feed on a wide variety of items. If your home has recently been flooded, you are definitely dealing with excess moisture.
But what if you haven’t had a flood? Is there still a chance you’ve got some excess moisture on hand?
Unfortunately, yes. If you’ve noticed some rooms in your home have a muggy feel to them or if you see condensation accumulating on your windows or mirrors, you have higher moisture levels than average. This can definitely lead to mold growth.
Musty Odor
Another sign of mold growth is a very distinct, musty odor.
If you aren’t up to date on the latest signs of mold (and there’s absolutely no reason why you should be unless you’re like me and work in the industry), you might associate this odor with your basement, if you have one, and assume that’s just how some basements smell.
I used to think basements just smelled musty.
Unfortunately, this is usually a big sign of mold growth and one that should encourage you to do a spot check of mold in your home. Plus, this odor isn’t relegated to basements only. This smell can show up anywhere mold is present.
Health Issues
Just like with any allergy, not everyone reacts the same way. Some people show no symptoms at all while others experience runny noses, headaches, itchy eyes and more. Depending on the severity of the allergy, some people can even have respiratory issues that affect their breathing.
If you’ve noticed symptoms that don’t seem to go away and there isn’t another obvious cause, there might be mold growing in your house.
Mold Stains
Seeing mold stains seems pretty obvious that you have mold, but let’s just include it to make sure we cover all the bases.
Mold comes in a variety of different colors and textures. It can be white and powdery or black and slimy. The darker varieties have a tendency to leave the more obvious stains. If you notice these on your walls or floors, it’s time to do a serious check for mold.
