Northern California Wildfires

6/5/2018 (Permalink)

Just a few months ago Sonoma, Napa, and Solano Counties experienced devastating wildfires. These wildfires exceeded $3 billion and over 14,000 homes were destroyed or damaged and smoke blanketed the San Francisco Bay Area. While some people barely notice the smoke, others struggled to breathe.

To be prepared (or at least reduce your risk) from fire and smoke, you should consider:
Installing and testing smoke alarms
Have fire extinguishers (your local fire department can advise you)
Have and escape plan (including: an evacuation route and a family meeting place).
Get to know your neighbors
Be aware of what is going on outside your home
Follow all instructions from emergency officials

Things to consider:
Emergency clothes (packed in a suitcase)
Water (for drinking and sanitation)
Food - at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food
Battery-powered or hand crank radio and a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert
Flashlight
First aid kit
Extra batteries
Whistle to signal for help
Dust mask to help filter contaminated air and plastic sheeting and duct tape to shelter-in-place
Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation
Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities
Manual can opener for food
Local maps
Cell phone with chargers and a backup battery
