Check It – Check smoke detectors, fire alarms, carbon monoxide detectors and flashlights to ensure they are operating properly. Have extra batteries on hand and replace if necessary. 

Keep a cache of candles on hand but when in use keep the flame away from flammable items and never leave them unattended.   Same goes for a portable space heater!

Flooding poses tremendous danger to both people and property. Since 1900, floods have taken more than 10,000 lives in the United States alone. Because it is often difficult to judge the depth of the water or the speed of the current, flood waters can be deceptive.

The Big Thompson Canyon (Colorado) Flood, which killed 139 people in 1976, proved a tragic illustration of a sobering statistic - 95% of those killed in a flash flood try to outrun the waters along their path rather than climbing rocks or going uphill to higher grounds.

Beyond the risk of fatalities, floods devastate homes, towns, and even entire regions. The great Mississippi River Flood of 1993 covered an area 500 miles long and 200 miles wide. More than 50,000 homes were damaged, and 12,000 miles of farmland were washed out.

June 1972 was a traumatic month. In the Black Hills of South Dakota, a series of thunderstorms caused heavy rains along the eastern slopes, resulting in flash flooding along Rapid Creek, which flows through Rapid City, South Dakota. The flooding caused more than $100 million in damage and at least 237 people died.

During that same month in the east, the remnants of Hurricane Agnes caused torrential rains across the mid-Atlantic states, especially from Virginia through New York. In the subsequent flooding and flash floods, 118 people perished and entire communities were inundated.

In November 1977, heavy rainfall helped to weaken an earthen dam near Toccoa, Georgia. The ensuing dam failure lead to the deaths of 40 people, half of them children. Most had lived mobile homes, less than a mile below the dam.

In February 1978, over 20 lives were lost in the Los Angeles area during the worst rainstorms ever seen in Southern California. Successive rain and mud slides during March brought damage totaling more than $80 million and increased the death toll to nearly 40 people.

Other historical flash floods include the Johnstown Flood of 1889 and the Shadyside, Ohio Flood of 1990.

With the relentless series of storms we've seen since last December, SERVPRO of Fairfield has seen a marked increase in water damage from roof leaks. Roof leaks can be a challenge to deal with! A roof leak only happens at the worst possible time, typically during the peak of a heavy rain/windstorm.

Roofs will leak for a number of reasons, including shoddy construction, holes made by animals, missing shingles thanks to intense wind and rain, problems with plumbing vents, damaged flashing and clogged and overflowing gutters. Consider the age of the roof, too. It may be so old and worn that it’s time for a proper replacement. Typically you’ll see staining on a wall or ceiling that will give you an idea you have a leak coming from somewhere. California Storms

late-season atmospheric river has pushed Northern California’s water year (Oct. 1 to Sept. 30) to the second wettest ever recorded, the National Weather Service said Friday.

The storm has dumped rain from the Bay Area north to Shasta and east to Susanville along the Sierra Nevada, where months of rain and snowfall have already filled reservoirs and saturated soils to levels not seen since before the drought

This week’s storms sent wind gusts blasting across the Golden Gate Bridge at 54 mph, according to the Weather Service. They also knocked out power to tens of thousands of Pacific Gas & Electric customers, the utility reported.

Caltrans reported that a water-saturated hillside in Oakland gave way and collapsed. It brought a road along with it.

The National Weather Service in Reno said the city received nearly an inch and a half of rain in 24 hours and up to 15 inches of snow in the mountains. Winds in the mountain tops reached 134 mph. An avalanche warning was issued for the highest peaks.

“This event isn’t expected to be as strong as storms in January and February but is a significant precipitation event for April,” the Weather Service said.

Winter Home Maintenance Tips

Preparing your home for winter is an important annual ritual for homeowners. And do not forget that tuning up your heating system now can help prevent more costly emergency repairs at the height of a storm, when it can be difficult to find supplies and licensed contractors. The following winter maintenance tips can help you prepare your home to withstand another cold season.

Clean It - Start the winter with a clean furnace - a cleaner furnace can save up to 5% of fuels costs over the course of the year compared to a dirty one.  And with this season’s lower than expected oil prices, filling up your tank will be more affordable.

Avoid ice damming by keeping gutters clear of leaves, sticks and other debris to ensure melting snow can drain properly. If the snow refreezes, it can lead to water damage inside your home or possibly even a roof collapse.

Seal It – Keep cold air out and warm air in this winter.  Grab a tube of caulk and take a walk around your home to seal any openings around windows, doors, vents and electrical wires.  Also sealing any openings will prevent mice from sneaking in to enjoy your warm winter air!

Remove hoses, turn off outside water and tighten outside faucets as pipes can burst if water in the pipe freezes.  And during a deep freeze, remembering to drip your inside faucets ever so slightly will greatly eliminate the risk of inside pipes bursting. 

Check It – Check smoke detectors, fire alarms, carbon monoxide detectors and flashlights to ensure they are operating properly. Have extra batteries on hand and replace if necessary. 

Keep a cache of candles on hand but when in use keep the flame away from flammable items and never leave them unattended.   Same goes for a portable space heater!

Store It – Having a supply of warm blankets in the linen closet, bottled water in the pantry and ice melting compound in the garage is always a good idea.  And keeping a small bucket of sand and a shovel handy insideyour home will be most helpful . . . especially if Old Man Winter brings a foot of snow to your door!

Historical Floods

Flooding poses tremendous danger to both people and property. Since 1900, floods have taken more than 10,000 lives in the United States alone. Because it is often difficult to judge the depth of the water or the speed of the current, flood waters can be deceptive.

The Big Thompson Canyon (Colorado) Flood, which killed 139 people in 1976, proved a tragic illustration of a sobering statistic - 95% of those killed in a flash flood try to outrun the waters along their path rather than climbing rocks or going uphill to higher grounds.

Beyond the risk of fatalities, floods devastate homes, towns, and even entire regions. The great Mississippi River Flood of 1993 covered an area 500 miles long and 200 miles wide. More than 50,000 homes were damaged, and 12,000 miles of farmland were washed out.

June 1972 was a traumatic month. In the Black Hills of South Dakota, a series of thunderstorms caused heavy rains along the eastern slopes, resulting in flash flooding along Rapid Creek, which flows through Rapid City, South Dakota. The flooding caused more than $100 million in damage and at least 237 people died.

During that same month in the east, the remnants of Hurricane Agnes caused torrential rains across the mid-Atlantic states, especially from Virginia through New York. In the subsequent flooding and flash floods, 118 people perished and entire communities were inundated.

In November 1977, heavy rainfall helped to weaken an earthen dam near Toccoa, Georgia. The ensuing dam failure lead to the deaths of 40 people, half of them children. Most had lived mobile homes, less than a mile below the dam.

In February 1978, over 20 lives were lost in the Los Angeles area during the worst rainstorms ever seen in Southern California. Successive rain and mud slides during March brought damage totaling more than $80 million and increased the death toll to nearly 40 people.

Other historical flash floods include the Johnstown Flood of 1889 and the Shadyside, Ohio Flood of 1990.
