Flooding in your Fairfield home

6/30/2019 (Permalink)

Common Issues With Flooding

Creeks, streams, and rivers around the surrounding Fairfield area are especially susceptible to substantial rainfall. Combating the effects of flooding in your home is not something that any homeowner is prepared to face, but something that many have to at one time or another. There are many considerations when it comes to flooding that urges the homeowner to choose professional restoration in light of doing the work themselves.

The more that you can understand about flood damages in your Fairfield residence, the better prepared you are for facing them. Many times, the damage is too serious to restore or clean up on your own, and the solution to this issue is to leave it in the hands of trusted professionals like our SERVPRO of Fairfield team.

One of the most obvious effects of flooding in your residence is the high volume of water. Within a short period, this presence can overly saturate construction materials and cause irreparable damage to the contents of your home in these affected areas. Mitigation of this damage is critical, and this process is most successful when homeowners waste no time in calling our SERVPRO of Fairfield technicians to get to work on stopping the damage from getting worse.

Another lesser considered aspect of creeks and streams rising is contaminants getting into your home from the runoff. Often many substances are haphazardly dumped into these bodies of water, diluding down to acceptable levels once it merges with a larger body. In your home, however, there could be foreign substances or even chemicals in the water affecting your house.

Mud and debris are also struggles that those facing flood damages have to contend with as well. Even in removing a significant amount of the water, dirt and mud cake to surfaces and saturate through carpeting. This inevitability requires specialized cleaning efforts beyond conventional extraction and drying for the water removal alone.

With so many mounting issues that come with flooding damages, professional restoration is the best hope for efficient removal of the water and quality cleaning efforts. Give our SERVPRO of Fairifleld technicians a call 24/7 at (707) 207-0122.

Storm related Water Damage

6/30/2019 (Permalink)

When a major storm passes close to the house, the home may suffer water damage that is difficult to repair. There are many things a family can do to begin repairing any destruction, but a certified professional will likely be needed to get rid of any serious health or structural threats. Contaminated storm surges or floods can carry pathogens and become a breeding ground for mold. If allowed to fester, these mold spores can spread throughout the building and become even more difficult to remove. In many cases, governmental agencies could condemn the structure if the microbial threat is too great.

The main reason why a home is sensitive to water damage is because moisture is difficult to detect once the floods recede. Standing liquids can encourage microbial growth within 24 hours and can saturate all kinds of textiles and seep through drywall. Moisture may collect behind the walls, where mold and bacteria may multiply out of sight. If a family reacts quickly enough, clothes and furniture may be saved. However, people must be careful when entering a building that has recently been flooded. Exposure to wildlife and contaminated liquids can result in serious injury.

Before entering a home affected by water damage, make sure the electrical power is shut off. Exposed wires or plugged in devices can electrocute people, resulting in major injury or even death. Also, it’s best to move slowly through the building when re-entering it for the first time. Snakes, reptiles or rodents may be hiding under debris and could lash out and bite suddenly. To protect against wildlife and airborne contaminants, wear protective clothing from head to toe, including a vapor respirator, rubber gloves and eye protection. Also, wear thick boots that can withstand puncturing and animal bites.

Professional restoration services can quickly identify what items in the home are compromised by water damage. Normally, anything that is porous may need to be discarded if it has come in contact with contaminated fluids. These items, like mattresses, box springs, pillows and particle board, trap more moisture than other materials and foster the growth of microbes. A family can prepare for professional cleaning by getting rid of these items before the technicians arrive, but be sure to properly record and itemize the items for insurance purposes prior to disposing.

Once professionals arrive at the building, they will be able to track down any pockets of excess moisture and remove them. Certified technicians can locate these pockets of moisture using equipment that measures the moisture in hidden pockets and behind tile and other materials that may not feel wet on the outside.  When these moisture pockets are found, the technicians will expose them to air by removing any drywall or other materials in the way. Once the location of the moisture has been determined, the professionals will begin the clean-up process that may include pressure washing the area with powerful detergents. These technicians are also able to speed up the drying process to prevent the growth of any molds or other harmful bacteria. If the professional locate mold or bacteria colonies, they will know how to identify and remove the threat using chemical or mechanical methods.

It’s important for a family to hire professionals that are certified through a reputable organization. Technicians trained in this area know how to find compromised areas and do what it takes to restore them.

Deodorizing after a flood

6/25/2019 (Permalink)

Dealing with the aftermath of flood damage due to a storm can be an uphill battle for any homeowner. The flood water often seeps into the structural cavities and creates a damp atmosphere. Not only does this pose a threat to the structural integrity of your home, it usually causes an odor problem. If not appropriately deodorized, this foul smell can linger on in your Ortega home long after the flooding.

Thankfully, here at SERVPRO of Fairfield, we use a multi-method approach to eliminate odors after a flood damage to your Fairfield property. Our IICRC certified professionals use various modern equipment to eliminate odors due to flood damage in no time. Here are some of the deodorizing techniques used to ensure elimination of odors after a flood.

Direct spraying: As the name implies, a deodorant is sprayed directly on the affected area using a pump. The method is useful if the intensity of the smell is not very high and the affected area is small.

Wet fogging: This method utilizes Ultra Low Volume (ULV) Foggers to dispense water or solvent-based deodorants. The ULV fogger generates minute particles of the chemicals that penetrate to the areas where the odor causing particles hide and change the composition of these substances.

Thermal fogging: The technique involves using heat to break up solvent-based deodorants into small particles that can reach the difficult to reach places. The deodorizing particles neutralize the odor-causing molecules right at the source. Although this method is most popular to deodorize after a smoke damage, it is sometimes used in case of flood damage as well.

Venting box fans: These are high-velocity axial fans that are used to ventilate and improve air circulation. These are used both before and after the deodorizing process. They can significantly shorten the time to deodorize and remove moisture at the same time.

Air Scrubbers: These devices are sophisticated air filters that use High-Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filtration technology. The air scrubbers can capture and eliminate odor-causing particles as small as 0.3 micrometers with an efficiency of 99.97%!

Getting rid of the stale, clammy odor can be a difficult thing to do after a flood damage. Professionals at SERVPRO of Fairfield can help you eliminate them in no time and get your home smelling like home again! "Like it never even happened."

Call SERVPRO of Fairfield today at (707) 207-0122 to talk to one of our flood damage restoration experts and discuss your deodorizing options after a flood damage. Remember, We're Faster to Any Size Disaster.

Storm Damage restoration process

6/18/2019 (Permalink)

Violent weather such as storm damage can wreak havoc on buildings as well as vegetation. Wind damage can be a hazard to the structure of a building, by loosening the shingles or tiles on the roof. This can cause moisture such as rain and snow to infiltrate into the protective surface of the roof, which will result in the wood swelling and later on disintegration and becoming moldy. This outcome will lead to a sagging ceiling and further problems. Elements such as wind, rain, hail, and lightning can result in turning people’s lives upside down, this is why having SERVPRO of Fairfield to help during this type of emergency is a good option.

Here are some of the activities you can expect from SERVPRO of Fairfield.

  • Whether it is a business or residence, SERVPRO of Fairfield will come to your property and their trained experts will do a thorough examination of the interior and exterior of your building. This will help them discover the level of the damage. In many cases, SERVPRO of Fairfield will discuss the renovation plans with you and your insurance adjuster.
  • When everything is agreed upon, the work begins. Depending on what type of damage is present, this will determine the type of equipment the professional will use. In the case of flooding, they will use specialized pumps and vacuums to remove water from the affected areas.
  • Generators will be brought in to operate their dehumidifiers and air movers so mold and mildew do not have a change to make matters worse. Using customized cleaners, the specialist will then disinfect hard surfaces and shampoo salvageable carpets as well as apply deodorant to combat any odors.

If contacted in time, SERVPRO of Fairfield will be able to rescue your building from greater structural issues.

As you can see, when you suffer from natural disasters, the storm damage restoration process is something the experts can handle.

If you've recently suffered from storm damage and are looking for storm damage repair or water damage cleanup, contact the specialists at SERVPRO of Fairfield today to help reinstate your home.

What To Do Now And When The Storm Ends

3/11/2019 (Permalink)

If Hurricane Sandy hit your home, you've probably lost something, from a few shingles to the whole shebang. If you've planned well, you can keep your losses as low as possible. And if you haven't planned well, you can take action now to minimize your losses in the next disaster.

The best thing you could have done before Sandy struck was make an inventory of your house and your possessions. There's even an app for that if you still want to do it. Go to the Insurance Information Institute's website (www.iii.org/software) and download its home inventory app. The app lets you enter information on where you bought your possessions and how much they cost. All the information is stored remotely, so even if your iPhone gets swept out to sea, you'll still have a record of what you lost. Make sure you know your insurance policy number -- and, if possible, where a copy of your policy is. If you haven't read your policy, this is a very good time to review it. "Reading a policy isn't exciting, but it's very important," says John Egan, editor of InsuranceQuotes.com.
Most policies will cover wind damage, and they will cover water damage if a tree crashes into your roof. But flood damage typically requires a separate policy. "There are many people who find out the hard way that flooding can cause a lot of damage," Egan says. Most flood insurance policies kick in 30 days after you sign them.

Winterize Your Home!

2/1/2019 (Permalink)

Preparing your home for winter is an important annual ritual for homeowners. And do not forget that tuning up your heating system now can help prevent more costly emergency repairs at the height of a storm, when it can be difficult to find supplies and licensed contractors. The following winter maintenance tips can help you prepare your home to withstand another cold season.

Clean It - Start the winter with a clean furnace - a cleaner furnace can save up to 5% of fuels costs over the course of the year compared to a dirty one.  And with this season’s lower than expected oil prices, filling up your tank will be more affordable.

Avoid ice damming by keeping gutters clear of leaves, sticks and other debris to ensure melting snow can drain properly. If the snow refreezes, it can lead to water damage inside your home or possibly even a roof collapse.

Seal It – Keep cold air out and warm air in this winter.  Grab a tube of caulk and take a walk around your home to seal any openings around windows, doors, vents and electrical wires.  Also sealing any openings will prevent mice from sneaking in to enjoy your warm winter air! After the Storm

2/1/2019 (Permalink)

Natural disasters such as hurricanes cause a lot of water damage to people's homes. Surprisingly however, it's the small things like leaking hoses and broken pipes that have been rendered many homeless due to unexpected flooding. The loss of property can be overwhelming; however, there is hope. Professional water damage cleanup service providers are experts and transforming a flood damaged home back to original condition (if not better).

During such disasters, water can get into all parts of your home; from the ceiling to the basement. If you have a hardwood floor, it will absorb water, and the wood will begin to warp and bend. You need a professional service that is equipped with the technology to dry the water from the floor, and save you a small fortune. The walls of your home will also absorb water, and this may cause structural weakness, posing a danger to you and your family. The attic or ceiling of your home can also store moisture which may cause it to collapse. Given these dangers, only experts can help you remedy the situation effectively. Most water damage cleanup services are available to you 24/7, so you can call whenever you require them, and they will send their team to your rescue.

Apart from the water seepage in the floor and walls, your furniture, and other items will suffer damage after a storm. Not everything may be salvageable, but there are steps that can be taken to restore furniture and other precious items. Water can be removed from carpets and upholstery, as well as dry wooden cabinets, and other household goods. Even if the water damage seems extensive, you could be pleasantly surprised to find your home retaining much of the semblance that it had before the flooding. If any of the items are completely damaged, the cleanup service will remove the debris and ensure that your home is completely clean. They will then sanitize the home, and ensure that there is no danger of mold growing. Mold can pose a serious risk to your family, and they ensure that the home is completely dehumidified, and sanitized.

Electrical systems are bound to suffer damage during such a storm. The professional cleanup service will ensure that the wiring is safe to use before they restore electricity in your home. They will inspect the outlets, and much of the wiring, especially in area where there was a lot of water absorption. Before they let you back into the house, they will ensure that everything is in its proper place, and your home is safe for habitation, once again.

Winter Home Maintenance Tips

Preparing your home for winter is an important annual ritual for homeowners. And do not forget that tuning up your heating system now can help prevent more costly emergency repairs at the height of a storm, when it can be difficult to find supplies and licensed contractors. The following winter maintenance tips can help you prepare your home to withstand another cold season.

Seal It – Keep cold air out and warm air in this winter.  Grab a tube of caulk and take a walk around your home to seal any openings around windows, doors, vents and electrical wires.  Also sealing any openings will prevent mice from sneaking in to enjoy your warm winter air!

Remove hoses, turn off outside water and tighten outside faucets as pipes can burst if water in the pipe freezes.  And during a deep freeze, remembering to drip your inside faucets ever so slightly will greatly eliminate the risk of inside pipes bursting.

Check It – Check smoke detectors, fire alarms, carbon monoxide detectors and flashlights to ensure they are operating properly. Have extra batteries on hand and replace if necessary.

Keep a cache of candles on hand but when in use keep the flame away from flammable items and never leave them unattended.   Same goes for a portable space heater!

Store It – Having a supply of warm blankets in the linen closet, bottled water in the pantry and ice melting compound in the garage is always a good idea.  And keeping a small bucket of sand and a shovel handy insideyour home will be most helpful . . . especially if Old Man Winter brings a foot of snow to your door!

Historical Floods

1/4/2019 (Permalink)

Flooding poses tremendous danger to both people and property. Since 1900, floods have taken more than 10,000 lives in the United States alone. Because it is often difficult to judge the depth of the water or the speed of the current, flood waters can be deceptive.

The Big Thompson Canyon (Colorado) Flood, which killed 139 people in 1976, proved a tragic illustration of a sobering statistic - 95% of those killed in a flash flood try to outrun the waters along their path rather than climbing rocks or going uphill to higher grounds.

Beyond the risk of fatalities, floods devastate homes, towns, and even entire regions. The great Mississippi River Flood of 1993 covered an area 500 miles long and 200 miles wide. More than 50,000 homes were damaged, and 12,000 miles of farmland were washed out.

June 1972 was a traumatic month. In the Black Hills of South Dakota, a series of thunderstorms caused heavy rains along the eastern slopes, resulting in flash flooding along Rapid Creek, which flows through Rapid City, South Dakota. The flooding caused more than $100 million in damage and at least 237 people died.

During that same month in the east, the remnants of Hurricane Agnes caused torrential rains across the mid-Atlantic states, especially from Virginia through New York. In the subsequent flooding and flash floods, 118 people perished and entire communities were inundated.

In November 1977, heavy rainfall helped to weaken an earthen dam near Toccoa, Georgia. The ensuing dam failure lead to the deaths of 40 people, half of them children. Most had lived mobile homes, less than a mile below the dam.

In February 1978, over 20 lives were lost in the Los Angeles area during the worst rainstorms ever seen in Southern California. Successive rain and mud slides during March brought damage totaling more than $80 million and increased the death toll to nearly 40 people.

Other historical flash floods include the Johnstown Flood of 1889 and the Shadyside, Ohio Flood of 1990.

The Rain is Coming

11/1/2018 (Permalink)

We have all had a great summer enjoying the beautiful clear skies and sunny days. Unfortunately, that has almost come to an end. Now we need to get ready for the rain. Water damage isn't limited to rain but rain is definitely a cause. Before it starts to pour take precautionary measures to keep the rain out of your home to prevent a water loss.

  • Maintain your Roof

Your roof's primary purpose is to keep water out of your house. neglecting it could lead to a whole lot of problems.

  • Seal Windows and Doors

Windows and doors are common vulnerable areas for water leakage. Water can seep through the space around window and door frames if they're not properly sealed.

  • Maintain Your Home's Exterior Finish

Periodically inspect your exterior walls and look for signs of damage such as holes, wood rot, or warping. If caught early enough, you may be able to clean out the wet materials and repair the affected. (SERVPRO can help with that!)

  • Clean Your Gutters

Make sure your gutters are properly functioning and clean. It is critical to do so as it protects your home from water damage. (SERVPRO can help with that!)

  • Ensure Proper Drainage

You can always take measures to keep water out of your home but if water isn't properly diverted away from the base of your home, your foundation could be at risk.

  • Check Your Downspouts

Functioning gutters send water out through a downspout, which funnels the water from your home. If the downspout does not extend far enough, it could funnel directly into a puddle at the bottom of your house thus flooding your crawlspace. (SERVPRO can help with that!)

  • Redirect Runoff

If your home sits on the bottom of a slope, water runoff from your yard should be redirected away from your home. If it is not, then you will most likely have problems with standing water near your foundation. This could cause the ground near your foundation to erode overtime, making it vulnerable.

Be sure to waterproof your home before it leaks into bigger problems. And remember who to call in case the water still makes it's way in ...

SERVPRO of Fairfield!

Rain, Rain Go Away

10/25/2018 (Permalink)

With the relentless series of storms we've seen since last December, SERVPRO of Fairfield has seen a marked increase in water damage from roof leaks. Roof leaks can be a challenge to deal with! A roof leak only happens at the worst possible time, typically during the peak of a heavy rain/windstorm.

Roofs will leak for a number of reasons, including shoddy construction, holes made by animals, missing shingles thanks to intense wind and rain, problems with plumbing vents, damaged flashing and clogged and overflowing gutters. Consider the age of the roof, too. It may be so old and worn that it’s time for a proper replacement. Additionally, skylights and chimneys traditionally leak because they’re essentially sealed holes in the roof! There's a joke, there's 2 types of skylights, those that leak and those that will....

Typically you’ll see staining on a wall or ceiling that will give you an idea you have a leak coming from somewhere. In extreme cases SERVPRO of Fairfield has been called out when the ceiling has already come crashing down. The insulation in attics is very absorbent and can hold quite a bit of water; a slow leak can take weeks sometimes to reveal itself, usually with a loud crash and ceiling drywall and insulation covering everything in the house!

The best time to trace where the leak is coming from is to examine its trail as best you can when it’s raining outside. SERVPRO of Fairfield has the tools to help track the leak to its source. Once it's found a roofer can come by and either temporarily tarp the roof or get it repaired if the rains stopped!

What To Do When A Home Suffers From Storm Related Water Damage

10/22/2018 (Permalink)

We're always ready to help!

Deodorizing After a Flood Damage: How is it Done?

10/4/2018 (Permalink)

Fast Removal needed to Mitigate Odors and Other Damages caused by flooding.

Common Issues With Flooding In Your Fairfield Home

10/4/2018 (Permalink)

With so many mounting issues that come with flooding damages, professional restoration is your best hope.

Storm Damage Restoration Process

10/1/2018 (Permalink)

After the Storm

2/26/2018 (Permalink)

Winterize your home!

2/9/2018 (Permalink)

California Storms

4/10/2017 (Permalink)

late-season atmospheric river has pushed Northern California’s water year (Oct. 1 to Sept. 30) to the second wettest ever recorded, the National Weather Service said Friday.

The storm has dumped rain from the Bay Area north to Shasta and east to Susanville along the Sierra Nevada, where months of rain and snowfall have already filled reservoirs and saturated soils to levels not seen since before the drought

This week’s storms sent wind gusts blasting across the Golden Gate Bridge at 54 mph, according to the Weather Service. They also knocked out power to tens of thousands of Pacific Gas & Electric customers, the utility reported.

Caltrans reported that a water-saturated hillside in Oakland gave way and collapsed. It brought a road along with it.

The National Weather Service in Reno said the city received nearly an inch and a half of rain in 24 hours and up to 15 inches of snow in the mountains. Winds in the mountain tops reached 134 mph. An avalanche warning was issued for the highest peaks.

“This event isn’t expected to be as strong as storms in January and February but is a significant precipitation event for April,” the Weather Service said.

When winter snow eventually melts, it will send millions of acre-feet of water down into California’s rivers and reservoirs, potentially causing floods. In the interim, it’s creating dangerous conditions on highway passes.

Before the Storm

2/23/2017 (Permalink)

If Hurricane Sandy hit your home, you've probably lost something, from a few shingles to the whole shebang. If you've planned well, you can keep your losses as low as possible. And if you haven't planned well, you can take action now to minimize your losses in the next disaster.

The best thing you could have done before Sandy struck was make an inventory of your house and your possessions. There's even an app for that if you still want to do it. Many apps let you enter information on where you bought your possessions and how much they cost. All the information is stored remotely, so even if your iPhone gets swept out to sea, you'll still have a record of what you lost. Make sure you know your insurance policy number -- and, if possible, where a copy of your policy is. If you haven't read your policy, this is a very good time to review it.

Many types of storms

12/1/2016 (Permalink)

This may be hard to believe but every state in the U.S. has experienced at least some type of flooding within the past six years.  Even homeowners who don’t live next to a body of water can experience costly and dangerous flooding. Severe thunderstorms, hurricanes, heavy rain, or snow melting on mountaintops hundreds of miles away can make the flood waters rise. Mother Nature isn’t the only reason floods occur.  Broken pipes, sewer line backups, damaged appliances, faulty sprinkler systems, and overflowing sinks and tubs are other reasons your home might flood.

If you find a leak and you put off fixing it, it could lead to an even bigger water damage disaster or even mold growth. Don’t delay addressing water damage – you may not be able to see the extent of the damage until it is too late

Clean It - Start the winter with a clean furnace - a cleaner furnace can save up to 5% of fuels costs over the course of the year compared to a dirty one.  And with this season’s lower than expected oil prices, filling up your tank will be more affordable.

1/18/2016 (Permalink)
